We’re feeling a little melancholy, not unlike Christopher Lee’s Dracula, because this will be the last Hammer Film Dracula movie we will discuss for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. Christopher Lee appears in three more Hammer Films as Dracula but Peter Sasdy’s 1970 film “TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA” will be our last for the season and perhaps that’s for the best because some of Dracula’s choices seem a little unlike what we’ve come to appreciate from our gothic fuckboy. Not that there’s isn’t some fun things to see, like satanic rituals, fabulous pimps, patricide and the tried and true village hottie. Dracula himself may have lost a few things after so many resurrections but he doesn’t lose that classic presence that Christopher Lee provides. Oh, Hammer. We miss you already. You better believe we will revisit their fare in the future.

It’s HALLOWEEN HUMPEST and we’re humping around with a horror discussion every weekday this month and we’re capping off this week with a fucked up Austrian/German flick that was banned in many theaters in Europe as well as the United States. It was Gerald Kargl’s last and most notorious movie based on a true story. This movie didn’t even get widely distributed until the 2000s. We’re talking about the terrifying movie “Angst” from 1983 starring Erwin Leder as a complete bonkers murder horny psychopath who keeps falling through the system’s cracks until he finally manages to make his way to a desolate house in the forest and all the confusing and terrifying acts are painstakingly drawn to their full conclusions. One of the most disturbing and visceral selections this month. Let us know if you get horny watching this so we can call the proper authorities. There’s a dog in it too.

It’s been a weird week in this final full week of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. It’s been some pretty crazed haunts and Michael J. Fox enterprising haunts and now we’re back to more crazed haunts in another Japanese feature that somehow, arguably, isn’t the weirdest shit we’re watching this week. Commercial director Nobukiko Obayashi was tapped by Toho Films to make whatever their own version of JAWS should be. After a little industry hot potato and some wild ass ideas from the mind of a little girl, the 1977 film “HOUSE’ was born. A cult classic by western standards but a hit in Japan in its day. Seven girls go to their Aunt’s house who is actually an enraged spirit who is so angry about World War II that her, and the house, will eat these girls and consume their essence with one remaining to carry on for the tortured spirit in physical form. An delightfully insane onslaught of imagination. It’s on MAX and if you ain’t got that shit just watch it here: https://archive.org/details/house_202106

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST stays humpin’ and this mid-week sub theme is “ghosts, spirits, and haunts” and we go for a bit lighter spooky fare with Peter Jackson’s 1996 comedy-horror “The Frighteners” starring Michael J. Fox as a man who can see ghosts and makes a buck off of it. There’s also Starkweather type antagonists and an FBI agent who is beyond absurd. This was Peter Jackson’s most mainstream movie at this time and was also Michael J. Fox’s last lead performance in a feature film. This was years into his initial Parkinson’s diagnosis. It’s an absolutely loaded spookshow with that very familiar tone of “creepy whimsey” that would pop up in movies during this era. Many love this flick but where are we on it? Hear us, and our dog noises, to find that out.

It’s our last full week of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and shit is about to get haunted as we drop what will probably be our strangest movie this month. We’re breaking the MOVIEHUMPERS seal on Takashi Miike and that should tell you most everything you need to know. This isn’t one of his kids movies. We’re deep diving into YAKUZA HORROR territory and for the love of God, don’t go to Nagoya. Don’t let your YAKUZA buddy near that small dog. Don’t go to the restaurant ran by a ghost. Don’t talk to that guy in the field with the half painted face. Don’t go to that hotel with the milk lady and her brother and DEFINITELY don’t go upstairs. Spirits, fables and urban legends collide into a mad fever dream in Takashi Mike’s 2003 cult mindfuck “GOZU”. Can I ask you an earnest question? Can you put me in your body and birth me out? Here’s the archive link to the movie if you want to check it out: https://archive.org/details/gozu.-2003.-unrated.-ws.-dvdrip.-xvi-d-c-00-ld-ud-e

We’re returning for our penultimate Hammer Films Dracula feature this month and we aren’t with Terence Fisher this week, instead we check out an early director work by the acclaimed cinematogrpaher, Freddie Francis. Last we saw Dracula, his sad-ass fell into some ice. How does he get out of that pickle? Well, a sadder-ass priest slips on some rocks right outside of the castle and bleeds into cracks in the ice which happens to be right over Dracula’s mouth. That’s more than enough to bring our most tragic fuckboy back into the fold. We’re going on about Hammer Film’s third Christopher Lee Dracula portrayal in 1968’s “DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE”. Dracula is definitely looking for love and he’s found the right girl, but he will have to contend with her Monsignor Uncle and her hunky atheist boyfriend. Will Atheist Paul’s experience in dealing with Dracula lead him to to understand that a lifetime of guilt and self loathing is the way to go? Dracula actually might be Catholic if you think about it. He fears the faith just as those within it do.

We just can’t get enough Christopher Lee this month so let’s make it five and check out his “Austin Powers” look. You’re the most catholic Scottish cop on the planet. You’re literally abstaining sex until marriage like a madman. You get a letter telling you that a girl has been missing on a place called Summerisle. You go there alone. People are fucking out on their lawns. Children are laughing at you. The old timers are lying to you. The lord of the place has more drip than you. Is this a murder mystery or are you a beetle on a string tied to a nail? We’re capping this week’s HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST with Robin Hardy’s 1973 cult creeper “The Wicker Man” starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland. If they just chilled out with the sacrifices then I would totally join this cult. Britt Ekland would not have had to sing and slap the walls for very long at all. I’m lonely.

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST will end up being discussions of 27 different movies when it’s all said and done. Frankly, we’re already tired and we’re gonna lie down and go to sleep. Let the little fibers of the special plant touch our skin. We will dry up into husks and come back good and wet as fresh pod people. Ready to continue the show in a much more dead-eyed fashion. We pick Podworld. Remember when people got sad that they couldn’t live in Avatar world? Well, we’re like that but with Podworld. Get into Podworld, man. We’re talking about Philip Kaufman’s excellent remake of a horror classic from 1978, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” starring Donny Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Lenny Nimoy and Jeffy Goldblum.

Second week into HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and you might notice that our midweek theme is involving things from beyond the sky. Lethal space invaders that might want to suck your blood out with a one of those whacky straws that they just pull out of nowhere. The Chiodo brothers rocked us with some great looking creatures in this 1988 sci-fi horror cult classic, “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”. These Killer Klowns are like those Killer Whales that grab hold of a seal, they wanna play with their food a little bit. They’re almost like humans except they leave when they’ve had all the blood they need. We’re worse than the Killer Klowns, honestly. The circus aesthetic is truly universal.

We’re deep into HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and this week we’re going to explore a little bit of horror from beyond the stars and this applies…we think. We’re discussing Jordan Peele’s “junior” effort. You never hear “junior” being sited when describing a director’s 3rd movie. You always hear “sophomore” but never “Junior”. But wait…didn’t Jordan Peele direct “Keanu”? His actual best movie that we saw in theaters? So yeah, this is actually his “Senior” film release and he will be in college for his next movie. Creep out with us because we’re discussing Jordan Peele’s “NOPE” starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer and holy shit maybe it’s actually an Angel!? Let’s keep the creepin’ movin’ today and every weekday.
