It’s ASSHOLES ON FILM month and should it be a surprise that a month full of main character assholes are also some very beloved and well regarded movies? We finally catch up to watching one of Lord Stanley’s films and it also happens be Bob’s favorite of his movies. Those interested in such things are well aware and much has been said of it over the years. We discuss one of our favorite movie assholes ever in Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 masterpiece, “Barry Lyndon” starring Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, Leon Vitali and many more. How did the typical small town Irish boy find himself amongst the pomp of nobility and how did it all fall apart? Iconic shots, perfectly patient, revolutionary lighting, amazing costuming, art inspired and hilariously vacant in expression. Except for that one sniveling boy lord. What more can be said on it? Tammy (2014)

It’s MOVIE ROULETTE REVIEW time!  Angela selected from a hat the category “Tammy” and, sure enough, we landed on the 2014 comedy “Tammy” starring Melissa McCarthy and directed by her husband Ben Falcone. This comedy was actually a hit, believe it or not! It’s only hard to believe because, while it did do well at the box office, nobody seems to speak of this movie. It’s star studded (Susan Sarandon, Toni College, Allison Janney, Mark Duplass, Dan Ackroyd, Sandra Oh, Kathy Bates) but it gets no lip service! We have no problem telling you why. This movie was intended to be some kind of in-show bit where we watch it over and over and over but…well…

A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

ASSHOLES ON FILM is our theme this month and our Monday vintage selections will be westerns. We will be featuring an iconic trilogy in the “spaghetti” kind of western. We’re discussing Sergio Leone’s MAN WITH NO NAME films starting with the 1964 hit that put Clint Eastwood on the map, “A Fistful of Dollars” which is really just a western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo” that was release the previous year. The Man with No Name strolls into a troubled town of two feuding factions and leaves it bloodier and more abandoned than it was before. His pockets a little bit faster. Hear us speak of the iconic films of Sergio Leone today and throughout the month!

In Bruges (2008)

NEW MONTH. NEW THEME. We’re pumped for September’s theme as we dive into some films that truly embody the nature of “the asshole”. ASSHOLES ON FILM is what we’re slipping into and we’re starting off with a movie chock full of assholes. Brimming with asshole cunts. We’re discussing Martin McDonagh’s worthy 2008 debut film “In Bruges” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Two hitmen are ordered to go to Bruge, Belgium and they’re not sure why. One is enjoying the town and the other hates it. It’s violent as hell and quite funny. Check it out first of you’re curious. We’re starting off ASSHOLES ON FILM with a gauntlet. A gauntlet of…assholes. I don’t know. They pay me to type out these episode descriptions for them. The only thing is, I’m not allowed to type them at home. I have to go to this warehouse in North Nashville. There’s a desk with an old laptop on it and only one working overhead lamp. Sometimes you hear what sounds like someone just outside hitting the ground with a chain. I’m not great at it but it’s easy money. It pays my tv and streaming bill.

X-Men (2000)

APOLOGIES FOR THE MICROPHONE DISTORTION IN THIS EPISODE. We cut out several minutes with way too much static but what is left is audible and is what we were able to salvage. Apologies again for the obnoxious pops. We think we fixed the issue for next time.
Goodbye ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY. You were an interesting theme this month. We say goodbye with a movie that was highly anticipated and we credit this as the first real seal coming off of the era of superhero domination. Good or ill. We were so young when we went to see this movie in theaters in the summer of 2000. We still had them dang towers! We’re discussing “X-Men” by the controversial director and alleged boy groper, Bryan Singer. This stars a very well cast Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and is Hugh Jackman’s breakout role. It’s a fun movie with a lot of ups and downs and we go out on the big screen mutants and get ready for our next insufferable theme. GOODBYE ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY.

Captain Blood (1935)

We end our vintage selections for our month’s theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY with a pirate picture that also stars Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and our main man Basil Rathbone. That shit-assed King James sent the good Dr. Blood and a bunch of scalawags to Port Royal to be slaves. It just so happened that all of these guys have experience manning some type of a ship and they all free themselves from the clutches of captivity and sail the dirty seas until that governors niece, Olivia de Havilland, is abducted back into Captain Blood’s life. A historical drama that is more adventure than facts but Michael Curtiz knows how to shoot it in the 1935 classic “Captain Blood”. Dude was pretty chill for having that last name. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

We’re sneaking in one more Batman movie for our month’s theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY and we’re doing it in homage to the late Kevin Conroy who voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne in the beloved 90s Batman cartoon “Batman: The Animated Series” The series had a theatrical venture in a critically well regarded animated movie done in the “Animated Series” style and it might the most well crafted Batman story to ever hit the big screen. We’re talking about “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” featuring the voice work of the great Kevin Conroy, Dana Delaney & Mark Hamill in yet another legendary Joker performance. Truly the character of Joker really makes actors go for it. Especially the greatest Joker of all time and we are, of course, talking about the Jared Leto Joker who had those awesome tattoos that said things like “Damaged” and “Ha Ha Ha Ha”. God he was so fucking cool.

Oliver Twist (2005)

It’s that time of the month. You know what we’re talking about. It’s time for our RANDOMLY GENERATED REVIEW and at the end of our last randomly generated episode we selected and movie we didn’t even know existed based on the Charles Dickens classic. We’re talking the 2005 film “Oliver Twist” and it’s not directed by Kenneth Branagh like we so confidently, and blindly, assumed. No, this perfectly fine and well executed film was directed by Roman “Meet me in Jack’s hot tub” Polanski. Yep, the infamous and influential director that can’t come back tot he United States unless he gets arrested for statutory rape. His victim forgave him a long time ago, but there is no “did he or did he not” hear. It’s pretty well acknowledged. You could say that Roman Polanski “artfully dodged” his ass to Europe to get away from these charges. That said, how does Polanski’s “Oliver Twist” stand out from the other many interpretations of the story? Ben Kingsley is pretty good, at least. We RANDOMLY GENERATE another movie at the end of the episode and we think your dad will be pleased.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

For this month’s theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY we’re going to the adventurous roots of characters and actors that inspired some later interpretations of costumed heroism. The spotlight is on Errol Flynn for the rest of this month’s vintage ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY and we’re hitting up Errol’s most prolific hit film from 1938, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” directed by Michael Curtis of “Casablanca” fame. Also starring our boy Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains and Olivia de Havilland. A very mirthful and iconic take of the Robin Hood mythos done in bold Technicolor. The most expensive movie of its day, this flick made $4 million bucks at a time when going to the movies cost 25 cents and it wasn’t even the top three earning movies that year. Hear us tell of it. Batman Returns (1992)

We round out week two of our ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY theme with “Batman Returns”, the most Burtonesque of the Tim Burton Batman films and there’s a lot of wacky, but also horny and disturbing, shit to behold here. It’s easily the horniest superhero movie of all time. Even the penguin is extremely horny. Will Catwoman ever find her Irving? Oh, and it’s a Christmas flick too. This stars Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeifer, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken and more. Meow.
